It’s that fun, sparkley time again, Fashion’s Night Out!
Last year I went to several events, shopped, drank, looked at great clothes, all that fun NY nightlife fashion fun. This year I have done a little early shopping and will be doing more of a Fashion’s Night IN, creating a lot of garments and accessories for my next upcoming book Stencil Style. Some things I will be using are Stained by Sharpie Fabric Markers, Martha Stewart Fine Glitter, Clorox Bleach Pens, and my own Stencil1 Sprayers. Not just t-shirts this time, I’m customizing some huge bangles, a few women’s dress jackets, and men’s ties among other things. Once I get rolling, it tends to become a snowball effect and I want to experiment and see what comes of it. Adding some spray effects to wood bangles, trying combining Martha’s glitter and glass beads for new colors and textures, just getting into it!

Vickie Howell
Hey all! Free stuff to be had from Vickie Howell. Vicki has written a new book Craft Corps where she shares conversations with 30 designers including yours truly (chapter 4!). I think the book is very inspiring to those trying to make a living being creative. Pick up a copy and see for yourself. Well, to promote the book, Vickie is giving away goods from various designers and today the give-away items are Stencil1 books and card making sets! Go HERE to enter and good luck!

The other day, Stencil1 got a head start on a little studio spring-cleaning. There are a couple major projects down the pipeline, so before we really get our hands dirty, we needed an organized space ripe for productivity (i.e., Ed had a bunch of stuff he needed to get rid of).
It was such a funny process, the mini trial that was conducted for each object. Ed, the prosecutor, me the jury. Each item was scrutinized for monetary value or sentimental worth. There was a selection of velvet rock posters from his brother’s bedroom, paperweights, lead type, battery-powered motors, maps, records, and books. I can’t remember it all. It reminded me of that birthday game. No, not hot potato or musical chairs or throw the socks in the laundry basket. Though, I think that last one was played only at our house. This is how it went: the birthday girl’s mother would come out with a tray of things covered by a dishtowel. She’d unveil the tray for about thirty seconds, during which time you studied it and committed its contents to memory. Then you furiously wrote everything down. I once won at Erinn Lynch’s birthday party and my prize, you ask? A fever meter! Remember those? An hourglass looking glass cylinder that was filled with colored liquid. When you held one end of it, the heat from your hand would propel the liquid to the other side. I remember thinking it was so cool.
Once we’re finished cleaning, we’ll be announcing our new projects. Stay tuned!
My friend Christian Sumner is a dedicated artist. Painter? Sculpture? Well sort of, but his materials are of the edible nature. He is a baker. Before I get into what Christian made with my stencils, let me start by saying nothing can leave his kitchen unless it is mouth-watering! It ain’t just pretty is what I’m trying to say. So last year, when I released Stencil101, Christian made a rich chocolate cake and stenciled my Chimp on it! This year, with the release of Stencil 101 Decor, I gave him pattern stencils from the book and also the smaller versions I sell as well. Since he is an artist, I left it up to him what to make. I just wanted to see pattern! Well, he over-delivered! Spiced cakes with chocolate icing and powdered patterns on top, placed side by side, forming a new pattern on our display table at my book launch events. Alongside them, I placed the cookies he stenciled with the tiny patterns. These blew me away, great colors and such detail! My favorite, A gingerbread man with a brick pattern within his frame! Please visit his blog A Baker In Brooklyn to see how he made all these goodies! He often mentions the music he is listening to to while baking, I like this added inspiring note. He also made my birthday cake last year, not stenciled, yet full of berries and chocolate! Hire this man. Thanks Christian, you’re a talent!
Please come to ETSY LABS for a night of Stenciling! Bring a t-shirt, a tote bag, a card, anything you’d like to stencil!

I took a trip to Muji the other day to buy some plain items that I could stencil. I found these simple pillow cases that I thought would be perfect to stencil a design onto from the new book. I am not sure why I am on such a turquoise kick, but I used it again to paint with! For this project, all you need is fabric paint, a stencil brush, a stencil and a pillowcase. I stenciled a design on each side just to test both out and voila! Check it out.

I felt it important to show you just what you get in the new book so here are some quick pics of the stencils pulled out of their folder. You get 10 precut plastic stencils(in addition to the awesome pictures and how-to’s ! ). Each stencil is large, 11 inches by 11 inches. The black and white pages you see are just inserts between the stencils for you to see the designs. I am about to get all these stencils covered in paint, I am making 200 tote bags! I’ll show that next post. Hope that helps!

I was contacted by the lovely gals who make up Design*Sponge recently to be considered for their sneak peek section of the site. This is where they show you the design interiors of designers. How flattering to be asked! Well, I immediately started cleaning! Luckily, over the last year or two, I have been getting rid of a lot of junk or at least storing it in my studio. Well, I shot the place and pointed out some of my favorite objets and added in a little bit of my design philosophy. They took that and made this wonderful article of it, I hope you like it. Thank you Design*Sponge!
