Sasha with her New Stencil1 Stencil Set

Announcing a wonderful collaboration, Stencil1 has partnered with the Sasha Project LA and made a new stencil set inspired by Sasha’s favorite images!

The Sasha Project LA and Ed Roth, designer and owner of Stencil1® today announced the release of a new set of stencils inspired by Sasha’s unique art style. Roth in collaboration with Sasha, created the stencil set with the purpose of not only sharing the mission of The Sasha Project LA, but also to motivate people of all ages to show their creative side by using these stencils to demonstrate how art can change their lives in different ways as it has for her.

Sasha was born with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and has found art to be the best way to improve the physical challenges of her CP. She was also born with a strong artistic talent and as soon as she discovered it when painting denim in her backyard, she and her mother thought of a way to give back to the community. Painting jeans started as a fun and highly therapeutic activity for Sasha – This is how The Sasha Project LA was created and Sasha started painting denim for a donation that later would be for the therapy art programs at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

This exclusive set of stencils are consistent with the imaginative and creative mind that Sasha possesses and will only be available for purchase on her website. The set includes a thunderbolt, a heart, a unicorn and a rainbow, each of them designed to create colorful artistic results. All of the stencils are washable and reusable and can be used on any surface including glass, concrete, wood, metal, paper, fabric and ceramic.

Proceeds collected by this collaboration will help thousands of patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles where art programs take place. The CHLA Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists program is designed for patients to express themselves through visual arts, music, dance and drama; giving Sasha and others the opportunity to keep healing through art.

Take the stencil of your choice and place it wherever you’d like on your denim jacket. Here we’re using the Stencil1 Staggered Triangle repeat pattern stencil on the Levi’s® Trucker Jacket! If you plan on only painting one portion of the jacket, use some tape to tape off the edges for a clean finish.

Load up your brush and start painting away! The best method to use when painting with stencils is a dry brush (no water, just paint!) method using a dabbing motion. This ensures that no paint will seep underneath the stencil.

Once the paint is dry, carefully lift up the stencil to reveal the pattern!

Continue to paint the pattern using the register marks on the stencil as a guide. This will help you repeat the pattern successfully on any surface no matter what size!

Recapitulation, a practice used by an ancient warrior tribe in Mexico, is the act of replenishing lost energy to oneself. Today,  recapitulation is a meditation practice where, at the end of the day, you wind down by thinking in under 5 minutes all you did in that day.  It’s a little bit of time to decompress, be mindful and feel your accomplishments. Well, what about applying it to an entire year?

The world moves so fast that it’s easy to get buried by the details, the emails. In thinking about 2016, we want to take stock of 2015. What did we accomplish, what do we want to do more of, what do we want to do differently, who do we want to work with?

“I think looking back at the year for anyone is empowering and keeps you going,” Ed says. “So this exercise of recapitulation is key.

As a small business owner, you wear many hats and are often overwhelmed and this exercise allows me to feel successful and energized for 2016.”

A few Stencil 1 2015 highlights:

February was a boon when we were awarded Product of the Year for our repeat pattern stencil kits. It’s a consumer-voted award, which felt extra gratifying.

Ed continues, “Events always feel great, since we tend to work in a bubble most the time.” (Speaking of our bubble, it just got a beautiful new makeover a la The Container Store, pics and story to come soon!)

“Seeing people embrace creativity keeps me going.” Last year, Stencil 1 participated in a variety of celebrations: Clarks Shoes’ 65th anniversary of their desert boot, a pop-up shop at Le Bon Marche in Paris, a community mural at the Brooklyn Museum for their show, Art Off the Wall: The Rise of Sneaker Culture, and a personalized T-shirt event with kids and teens in Miami at the Soho Beach House.

“I think the exercise in looking back and writing a list of your accomplishments, well, it gives you a boost for the year ahead and also reminds you of why you do what you do,” Ed says. “I design stencils and other creative tools to empower people with creativity and hopefully make them happier in some way.”

So what about you? We’d love to make this area of Stencil 1 a conversation space. Let us know what you’d like to see more of? What kinds of projects are you looking to do? How can we assist? We’ll be thinking of you in our daily recapitulation.

In January we were lucky enough to have a booth in Maker Space at the CHA Megashow. The Stencil1 team had an incredible experience during our time there and we wanted to share some of the highlights with you!

We flew into LA on Thursday night and were up early on Friday morning to set up our booth. Our booth was in the Maker Space which was a wonderful area that celebrated creativity, innovation, and customization. The Maker Space was curated by Sarah Hodsdon, who is is the smartest and most supportive gal I know. She made the Maker Space an unbelievably fun and creative area!

Two things we were extremely excited about were the debut of our award-winning repeat pattern stencils and tools, and playing with our paint to stencil made by Pebeo Paint, who were our paint sponsor during CHA. Everyone who visited the booth had a blast experimenting with their fabric paints.

One of the highlights of our trip was participating in the FaveCrafts Blogger Networking Event. We connected with so many wonderful artists and bloggers from around the country and hope to collaborate with many of them in the future!

Some of the most memorable times of the show happened during our make-and-takes. We made a lot of friends and had great conversation with all the visitors who stenciled a tote bag at our booth. Not to mention, I had the honor of getting a pic with craft guru Jo Pearson and got a squeeze from my dear and talented friend Candie Cooper.
