Fashion Night Out

It’s that fun, sparkley time again, Fashion’s Night Out!

Last year I went to several events, shopped, drank, looked at great clothes, all that fun NY nightlife fashion fun. This year I have done a little early shopping and will be doing more of a Fashion’s Night IN, creating a lot of garments and accessories for my next upcoming book Stencil Style. Some things I will be using are Stained by Sharpie Fabric Markers, Martha Stewart Fine Glitter, Clorox Bleach Pens, and my own Stencil1 Sprayers.  Not just t-shirts this time, I’m customizing some huge bangles, a few women’s dress jackets, and men’s ties among other things. Once I get rolling, it tends to become a snowball effect and I want to experiment and see what comes of it. Adding some spray effects to wood bangles, trying combining Martha’s glitter and glass beads for new colors and textures, just getting into it!

Looking for a way to liven up your bedding without having to go shopping? Look at what you can do with set of solid-color sheets and stencils from Stencil1. We used our Headphones stencil on the pillows cases and coupled it with the Graffiti Mini Set #1 on the flat sheet.

It’s the perfect weekend project for you, you and your sweetie,  or the whole family.

The stencils are available individually at www.stencil1.com or some such as the headphones are one of 25 designs in our book Stencil101. Stencil Style 101 also has designs that are great for sprucing up apparel and home decor!

Here’s what you need and how to do it:

Materials: pillowcase, stencil, fabric paint, stencil brush, painter’s tape or spray adhesive, iron, cardboard or shirt box.

1. Choose your pillowcase: You can use a cotton standard bed pillowcase or a canvas throw pillow case for this project.

2. Prep the pillowcase: Insert a sheet of cardboard into the case to stretch the pillowcase flat and provide a flat surface to stencil on.

3. Position your stencil: You may wish to hold the stencil in place with a low tack spray adhesive or painters tape.

4. Begin painting: Using fabric paint and stencil brush, carefully paint in the stencil open areas using a pouncing motion. It’s best to use a non-toxic fabric paint rather than experimenting with spray paint or other paints given that you’ll be sleeping on it. Once completed, lift the stencil to see your design.

5. Finishing: Heat seal the painted design by using a hairdryer for 2 minutes then ironing the pillowcase inside out.

I’ve posted earlier how Erica Domesek of P.S. – I Made This totally hooked it up by asking me to cut some of my stencil designs for the Sharpie DIY Fashion booth inside the tents at Fashion Week. Well, I went to the booth today to help out and stencil some stuff. I met the Sharpie people and a ton of fashionistas plowing into the booth to give it a go! Betsy Johnson provided a t-shirt that people also could stencil on. Check out all the pictures!

If you are in the Bay Area, tune into View from the Bay at 3pm today on Channel 7 ABC News. I was honored to tape a segment with energetic host Lisa Quinn in her stunning home. I  showed Lisa how to make t-shirts and more using the stencils from our book.  Not in the Bay area? Well, they also stream the show live on their website here.  Hope you like it!

Country Living September 2009
Country Living September 2009 Featuring Stencil1 page 110

The NEW September issue of Country Living is a must-have and not just because it features Stencil1(page 110!). This issue shows so many affordable makeovers done in such a modern yet country eclectic way, I was honored to be a part of it. The magazine features our ever-popular birch tree stencil done tastefully on a simple white canvas pillow. I do have to add, you will want to use our non-aerosol fabric paints, the Stencil1 Sprayers, and these can be sprayed on or just open the bottle for more control with a foam brush or stencil bristle brush. Well, go check it out on news stands, it is a packed issue!
