GQ asked me to do 8 custom paintings for a GAP event they were curating for a San Francisco location. They wanted stencil paintings of San Francisco imagery and the canvas was to be Gap’s new khakis. This is a dreamy project for me not only because of the client but also because I used to live in San Francisco and have a big place in my heart for this city and because I often paint on tarps, see some of my art below.

So painting I can handle, but deconstructing and then reconstructing the khakis to be canvases, not my expertise. Enter Saira Huff. Designer and Super Seamstress to the rescue! A friend connected us and we clicked, she got exactly how the canvases should look. Hints of pant elements, not too much, use of the inner materials a bit, all just spot on. Check out her new store if you are in Brooklyn for vintage and custom finds.

I then started planning which stencils will go with which color khaki/canvas as well as how I can incorporate some layering and pattern into the pieces. I wanted the pattern involved as SF has so much life and history and the unique people that inhabit the city provide it so much influence and culture.

I used my new stencil brushes for the job, so excited to have designed these quality brushes!

As soon as I set up to start painting (I paint larger paintings on the floor), Larry has to be involved. Faithful assistant…

I use a variety of brushes when I make a painting to get different textures into the piece…

After I layer some pattern in, I like to paint a loose silhouette layer. This will get a more defined stencil detail layer over it but here’s where I add movement and some energy to the piece. In this case, the power of the cityscape within the charming SF landscape.

Then the detail gets painted in…

And here it is stretched…

Painting the Painted Ladies was fun too, I love the old Victorians on San Francisco.

Stretching canvas and stapling it is pretty satisfying…

Then they were done!  Shipped off to San Francisco, my second home, for a fun time with GQ and the Gap!

And here are images from the Gap event sent to me by my friend Katie Elks and my brother Charles.

I like how the Gap displayed the art in the midst of the khakis.

In January we were lucky enough to have a booth in Maker Space at the CHA Megashow. The Stencil1 team had an incredible experience during our time there and we wanted to share some of the highlights with you!

We flew into LA on Thursday night and were up early on Friday morning to set up our booth. Our booth was in the Maker Space which was a wonderful area that celebrated creativity, innovation, and customization. The Maker Space was curated by Sarah Hodsdon, who is is the smartest and most supportive gal I know. She made the Maker Space an unbelievably fun and creative area!

Two things we were extremely excited about were the debut of our award-winning repeat pattern stencils and tools, and playing with our paint to stencil made by Pebeo Paint, who were our paint sponsor during CHA. Everyone who visited the booth had a blast experimenting with their fabric paints.

One of the highlights of our trip was participating in the FaveCrafts Blogger Networking Event. We connected with so many wonderful artists and bloggers from around the country and hope to collaborate with many of them in the future!

Some of the most memorable times of the show happened during our make-and-takes. We made a lot of friends and had great conversation with all the visitors who stenciled a tote bag at our booth. Not to mention, I had the honor of getting a pic with craft guru Jo Pearson and got a squeeze from my dear and talented friend Candie Cooper.

All in all we had a fabulous show, met so many wonderful buyers, artists, crafters- a great time!

The first paint I ever purchased for stenciling t-shirts 10 years ago was Pebeo Setacolor.  Later in my business timeline, I connected with these great people and did some great projects and videos with them.
We were also lucky enough to work with Pebeo as our official paint sponsor during the CHA 2015 Megashow. We used Pebeo fabric paint to stencil t-shirts and tote bags at our booth. It was a perfect match!

Using Pebeo  paint, I stenciled a different shirt to wear each day.  It was fun to use the repeat wallpaper stencils on shirts! Since people always email me asking about paints for shirts, Pebeo products in NYC are at Blick, Utrecht and Da Vinci. And around NY at Hobby Lobby. Also a short selection at Michaels.

Now that we are back in the Stencil1 studio, we are having fun getting into other Pebeo products, especially their mixed media program. I’m kind of flipping out about the textures you can create with their products! More posts to come on the art we create using stencils and the Pebeo mixed media program!
