For this year’s Pride mural that Ed Roth does each year for Chalk Gyms, he decided to make a chalk mural of an icon and hero of the gay liberation movement-Marsha P. Johnson.

Marsha P. Johnson, a black transgender woman, stood at the center of New York City’s gay liberation movement for nearly 25 years. But LGBTQ rights weren’t her only cause. She was on the front lines of protests against oppressive policing. She helped found one of the country’s first safe spaces for transgender and homeless youth. And she advocated tirelessly on behalf of sex workers, prisoners and people with HIV/AIDS. All while draped in dashing outfits and flower headpieces and armed, people who knew her say, with a vibrant smile.

It all started with a stencil design and colorful illustration to work from…

Then we chalked it on the chalkboard walls using colorful Crayola chalk.

Great artistry help from Charles.

And then it’s done.

And posted to our reels on instagram @stencil1

And what’s the P for?

Marsha PAY IT NO MIND Johnson
Happy Pride! Remember, the Pride march started as a riot and never take our rights for granted!

Stencil1 likes to bring people together and work on community initiatives through creative murals! What makes Stencil1’s approach unique is we are not just painting the mural ourselves, Ed designs and executes a base mural that will later be further embellished by the community with stencils. Have a wall you want us to work on? Contact us and let us know!

PAINT NIGHT with Downtown Brooklyn Organization

Murals make great outdoor events! Ask us about designing a mural for your outdoor space.

The Brooklyn Museum

Indoor events can be done anywhere! This mural was done for the Brooklyn Museum’s The Rise of Sneaker Culture exhibit and was created on a paper wall since it was a temporary indoor mural. Attendees used markers and our stencils to “customize” this huge sneaker we drew. Events like this can be customized based on your message or theme.

Black Lives Matter and They Should Always Matter

Here at Stencil1, we are proud to work within the community to promote human rights activism and civil rights movements. It is black history month! And we think it’s a great opportunity for us to unite and also raise awareness about America’s history. Using only chalk, some of our designers were given the opportunity to draw this power fist. Under the direction of Chalk gyms, we came up with this design, with a quote from American activist and Chicago Black Panther Leader, Fred Allen Hampton, close to the entrance of Chalk Gyms, Brooklyn.

Born in 1948, Fred Allen Hampton was a chairman of the Black Panther Party in Chicago, Illinois. He was tragically murdered by local Chicago police who conspired with the FBI. He was only 21 years of age, and on his way to becoming the next National Black Panther Party leader. His life was senselessy snuffed out in the privacy of his own home, while the police held a press conference covering up their illegal raid. In his youth, he had gained the attention of Don Williams the head of the West Suburban Chapter of the NAACP when he organized groups to boycott in favor of black residents’ rights, in the village of Maywood, Chicago, Illinois. Deciding to protest the local and systemic disparities. Eventually he was recruited to the Black Panther Party’s ranks when Bobby Rush, Black Panther member and U.S. House Representative of Chicago’s 1st District, opened the first chapter of Black Panther’s party’s Chicago office.

Hampton was known for organizing programs for the black community but also extended the services towards Puerto Ricans, and poor white folk. He established a free medical clinic, free breakfast for school children, and even managed to create a peace pact between the most notorious street gangs in Chicago. Hampton was responsible for creating the multi-racial alliance Rainbow Coalition.

Yuli is a team member at Stencil1, she’s blocking in the basic shapes of the letters, for Fred Hampton’s quote.

Using dry hands was crucial in blending the layers of colors.

Under the direction of Chalk gyms, we came up with this design. Kenneth M. is very meticulous, here he is tightening up the shapes and removing imperfections like chalk fingerprints.

Thank you! We hope you learned something today!

I have done many chalk murals for Chalk Gyms but this one was quite special to me, the gay pride mural for June. I registered Stencil1 as an LGBT owned enterprise almost 2 years ago with the NGLCC and as a proud gay man was happy to work on this! And to make things even better, my partner worked with me on it 🙂

If you are a Chalk Gym member, be sure to show the love and post a pic with the mural and hashtag it #CHALKPRIDE and @stencil1 @chalkgyms

This was a PROUD moment for Stencil1 and we are grateful to CHALK Gyms for the opportunity and their support of the LGBT community!

I took a walk this morning to check out the world’s largest street mural in progress here in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The mural is featuring over 60 legendary graffiti artists from the 70’s and 80’s and is organized my Phun Factory.  The industrial area should see alot more foot traffic from this and this outdoor gallery willbe a permanent exhibit. I took some pictures of the start of this ever changing space. Enjoy.
