Plain Shirts In, One-of-a-Kind Out: My Two Days Live-Stenciling at Tecovas

Last week I told you how a pair of boots turned into a two-day live event at Tecovas for their 11th anniversary. (If you missed that story, start here — it’s a good one.) Well, this weekend it actually happened, and I’m still smiling about it.

Saturday was Williamsburg — the same N 6th Street store where I wandered into their launch party months ago. Full circle. I set up my table on the shop floor and painted from 2 to 5 while people picked their designs and watched their shirts change right in front of them.

Sunday was SoHo, and it was the same magic all over again: that moment when I lift the stencil and a plain shirt isn’t plain anymore. Initials in rope letters. A deer across the back. Stars on denim. Pieces that walked out the door as the only ones like them in the world.

Watching that happen never gets old. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, picked a design, and trusted me with your clothes — and to the Tecovas crews in Williamsburg and SoHo, who made both days easy.

If you missed it, you don’t need me standing in a store to get the same result. The Western stencil pack and the rope-style font I designed for this event are in the shop now — and this week I’m posting step-by-step videos of exactly how I stencil a shirt (cardboard, tape, dab, lift). Your favorite shirt is a blank canvas.
