“Pulled in too Many Directions” Beginner Friendly Mixed Media Journal #7

Beginner Art Journaling in 5 Easy Steps…

Materials Needed:

Step #1 Washi Layer: Place several washi tapes down in a pleasing pattern across your pages. Add glue stick under the tape for permanence and a layer of clear gesso over top.

Step #2 Collage and Stamping: Using an old ledger page (or any collage paper you may have on hand) trace the Triangles 2 Aligned Stencil with a pencil and cut out triangles.

Step #2 Continued: Place triangles down in a pattern of your choosing, I overlapped mine. Glue down with a glue stick and cover in clear gesso. Add some stamping in red ink through the small triangle stencil in the Patterns 8 Pack Stencil to marry all the elements. I also added brown ink to a chain-link rubber stamp in a few areas and teal ink with a numbers stamp.

Step #3 Stencils: Place the Antlers Small Stencil down over the collage elements and hold in place with washi tape. Using a palette knife or gift card, spread crackle paste through one antler at a time when dry. Let crackles appear without heat setting for the best effect. 😉

Step #4 Spray Inks: Color the Antlers with your favorite spray ink, I spritzed water over the crackle paste and used the applicator out of the bottle to touch around edges. (you could also substitute watercolors or water-soluble crayons or watered-down acrylic paint here if you don’t have spray inks. Build up with a few colors after heat setting.

Step #5 Focal Point and Edges: Select 1 or 2 photos to place as a focal point, ink edges so they stand out, and glue down. I typed the phrase “pulled in too many directions” and affixed it with small metal Brads through both pages. The final detail consisted of edging the outside of all the pages with brown ink and smudging some clear embossing ink in a few spots around the edges. Heat set red baked texture powder for some edging drama.

One thing I have learned in working for myself and creating my own company is to not think you can do it all. Learning to trust other creatives with your “baby” is a very important thing. This new stop motion video by Little Aaron and Friends just way exceeded my expectations. This team of animators created such a fun piece to simply demonstrate what’s in Stencil 201 and what can you do with it. Are you Curious?

My trip to San Francisco would not be as complete if I didn’t get to do this event at the Curiosity Shoppe. I love this shop! It has the most select, thought-out designer gifts. The owners, Lauren and Derek, are also guests in my new book Stencil 201, in which they show us a tasteful way to stencil grasscloth for use as placemats.

Well, the event coincided with a holiday street fair in the Mission so we had plenty of visitors who got to MAKE SOMETHING.

Some used Stained by Sharpie Fabric Markers to make canvas patches…Others used Clearsnap’s Colorbox pigment Ink Pads to make wooden postcards.

An added bonus was I got to finally meet a legend in the DIY world who I had emailed with for years – Grace Hawthorne, one of the founders of Readymade Magazine!Her new venture, Paper Punk, is well worth checking out, talk about a customized building experience!

And so the night was a sweet success, the only thing sweeter were these stenciled cookies by Sumner & Co, aka A Baker in Brooklyn, aka Christian Sumner is also a guest in Stencil 201 and shows y’all how to do it!

Stencil1 at SFMOMA for Book Signing & Demo = FUN!

In 1995, I interned at the SFMOMA. The museum was just built and I color corrected images in their digital lab among other things. I was thrilled just to be a part of the museum! Well, I had a new thrilling time at the SFMOMA when I did a book signing and demo/DIY table!  I basically let people from age 3 to 75 try out some Stencil1 stencils from Stencil 201 and they seemed to really enjoy it! We used Clearsnap’s COLORBOX Pigment Ink Pads to stencil wooden postcards and Stained by Sharpie fabric markers to stencil canvas patches.  Here’s a few images from the event. SCOPE Miami – too much fun!

To SCOPE ART and to all who attended, I say a big, fat THANK YOU! SCOPE is such an important show to me as it balances  street artists with come major,celebrated contemporary artists.  A completely inspiring environment to create art in, wouldn’t you agree?   We had so much fun making wooden postcards and canvas patches using Stained by Sharpie Markers! 99 ROOMS!

The Stencil1 crew stenciled 99 rooms in a new NYC Boutique hotel and in this video Dolinda Meeker (aka DeLo) and I  paint the last of the 99 rooms to show you just how we did it! We custom designed three designs – dancing girls, a blues singer, and a taxi in motion- all over 8 feet tall!  Hope you enjoy it!
